Cobbing Update.

Aug
29

So we've been continuing to work on the cob walls and things are starting to take shape. So far everything is still moving along nice and easy, without any major set backs. We are on our second truck full of sand, and will need at least one more to finish the job. Clay is still plentiful, and I imagine we are going to have quite a bit left. Probably enough to build another cob building if we wanted. There are some other projects that need to get done, but I have thoughts on trying to get a cob oven built next year if time permits.

Scrumdiddlyumptous!

Mmm, home baked pie. I can still taste the mouth watering, sweet and savoury, melt in your mouth apple goodness. Yup, I finally got around to baking all that crabapple pie filling, and it actually came out pretty darn good. I had my doubts, but it seems I'm a pretty decent baker. Actually there was one glitch. I made the crust from a recipe that uses butter instead of shortening. I read that butter crusts have more flavour, so that's what I used. Now the recipe never said one way or the other, so I went ahead and used salted butter.

Have You Been to Outer Space?

Aug
24

Have you been to outer space? Phoenix and I have, and let me tell you, it was one of the best adventures I've ever had. One morning last week she and I were starting our day just like any other. She'd watch her morning cartoons, while I finished up my second cup of coffee and perused through the internet. It was going to be a nice clear day. The kind that's great for cobbing, but something pulled my attention to Phoenix and I began to wonder what she would do that day. What kinds of things spark her interest. Well, what better way to find out than to ask.

Cob Studio Blues.

Aug
22

Well, it's not looking very bright. We had hoped to be at 4-1/2' on the wall by today, but we only made it to 3'. At this rate we will not make the deadline by the end of the month. It's nice to have Patricia home on the weekends to work on the cob, but there are still other things that need to get done, and there has been a decent amount of rain to boot. If we keep up this pace, we'll be into mid September before we are finished the walls. And depending on the weather, at that point we may not finish the building this season.

First Canning Experience

Aug
19

Finally! I finally had a chance to do some canning. This is something I've been wanting to do for a while now. I never seemed to have the produce or the supplies needed to do it before. Well, over the last couple of years we've been collecting the different bits of supplies used for canning. And now we have enough to get us going, including the produce, thanks to our garden. But even with all that, I was now having trouble finding the time to do the work.

Just Cobbing Along.

Aug
18

Well, we are still cobbing and trying to stay on track. We had a storm come through, so not much was done on Tuesday. Today was a bit better. We got a lot of wind which can get in the way at times, but at least there wasn't any rain. We also had a few more visitors come by to see what we are doing. We enjoy talking to them and telling them of our plans. We even had a couple of kids jump on in and give us a hand laying the cob up on the walls. We thought that was pretty cool.

Weekend Cobbing Update

Aug
15

Ok, ok. So we didn't get 2' done over the weekend as we hoped to. There were just too many other things that had to get done as well. A couple of them really took a big chunk out of the day. If this is the way it's going to be every day, we may as well piss on the fire and call in the dogs because this season will be over before we complete the walls. But as long as we can still see the grass, we're gonna continue right on a'goin.

Door Construction

Aug

I've had a few chances to do some more work on the entry door to the cob studio. I couldn't decide exactly how I was going to tackle it, but with a few tips from our readers, I found a system I'm happy with. Well, actually, there was a bit of trial and error as well.

Slow to Grow

Aug

Does anybody have any free time that we can take off their hands? Maybe I can start a kitty where people can toss in a few minutes or an hour of their time. All donations would go directly towards cobbing our walls. So if there is anyone out there that has said to themselves, "Wow, I have way too much time on my hands.", please feel free to donate that time into our kitty. Thank you.

Let the Cobbing Continue!

Aug
08

Ah, so now, today is going to be the day we really get cobbing. This is what we initially thought this morning. That is until we came to the conclusion that we couldn't, or should I say 'shouldn't', get sand from our usual spot anymore. The little voice in my head was louder today, than it was yesterday. It kept telling me not to go out and get more sand. It was so loud, I had to listen. You see, the sand belongs to someone. There is a road that goes right past it, so surely someone put the sand there for their own use.
